REQUIREMENTS FOR PROMOTION TO SHODAN

 (BLACK BELT)


Attendance: Minimum of 60 classes based on a 6 month period.


Basics (Kihon) 'All previous and current techniques could be given in Japanese terms*
Hands (Te)
ANY COMBINATION OF ALL PREVIOUS BASICS PLUS THE FOLLOWING

  1. Slide forward Jab / Counter punch (Mae-suberu Mae-te-zuki / Gyaku-zuki) 
  2. Slide forward Side elbow strike / Upward elbow strike (Mae-suberu Yoko-empi / Tate-empi)
  3. Slide forward Jab / Spinning backfist (Mae-suberu Mae-te-zuki / Mawaru uraken) 
  4. Jab / Spinning backfist / Counter punch / Stepping punch (Mae-te-zuki / Mawaru uraken / Gyaku-zuki / Oizuki)
    Kicks and Combinations (Geri / Rengo-suru)
  5.  Jab / Counter punch / Flying front kick / Flying side kick (Mae-te-zuki / Gyaku-zuki / Tobi-mae-geri / Tobi-yokogeri)
  6. Slide forward Jab / Counter punch / Front kick / Back kick (Mae-suberu mae-te-zuki / Gyaku-zuki / Mae-geri / Ushiro-geri)

Kata (Form / Formal exercise) All previous kata, Hangetsu (Half Moon), Ten-no-Kata (Universal Kata)

Written Exam (Shiken) 'Will be given week prior to test*

Sparring (Kumite)
1. Head Referee (Using all Japanese A.A. U. hand signals, commands and terms)
2. Basic One-Step Sparring (Kihon Ippon Kumite)
*All previous techniques using Tai sabaki*
3. Basic Five-Step Sparring (Kihon Gohon Kumite) 'All previous techniques'
4. Attack and Defense (Kobo) *See kobo page*
5. Three Point Match (Shobu Sanbon Kumite)
6. Free Sparring (Jiyu Kumite)

Self Defense (Goshin)
Numbers 10 - 13 (Chances are good you'll be asked to perform all techniques.) See Self-defense page.


Weapons (Kobudo)
1. Basic Bo and Sai Techniques (Bo and Sai kihon) All techniques.

2. Basic One-Step Sparring with Bo (Bo Kihon Ippone Kumite)
*All techniques listed under "One-Step Sparring with Bo"
3. Attack and Defense with Bo (Bo Kobo)
4. Basic One-Step Sparring with Sai (Sai Kihon Ippon Kumite)
*All techniques listed under "Basic One-Step Sparring with Sai"*
5. Kata (Forms / Formal exercise)
Bo Kata (Shushi-no-kon-sho and Sakagawa-no-kon-sho)
Sai Kata (Takai-no-sai and Tsukenshitaku-no-kon-sai)
*This test may also include requirements of kihon, kata, kumite, self-defense and kobudo not listed here but covered in other sections of the student test book or class prior to this test.
After completing and receiving their Black Belt students will be Introduced to Tonfa
After one year period an informal test will be given on Bo, Sai and Tonfa and if students pass they may be Introduced to the Kama.
