ATI Radeon 9000 series Overclocking
As you may already know, ATI implemented some checks for some of their Radeon 9000 series of graphic cards (e.g. Radeon 9000, Radeon 9500, Radeon 9700) to prevent overclocking (speed locked, clock locked).
Here is a simple, unobtrusive utility that will enable you to overclock your Radeon 9000 series graphic cards.
Instructions on using this utility (Hoger):
Step 1:
Overclock your card (Radeon 9000 series) using one of the available overclocking utility, for example:
- Radeonator (http://radeonator.cjb.net/) (freeware)
- RageTweaker (http://www.rage3d.com/r3dtweak/) (freeware)
- RadClocker (http://www28.brinkster.com/chrisww1942/) (freeware)
- PowerStrip (http://www.entechtaiwan.com/ps.htm) (shareware)
Step 2:
Run Hoger, preferably with no games running.
Click on the "Start" button.
Once finished, you can exit Hoger.
The graphic card's speed should now stay at its overclocked values, and not revert back to its default values.
NOTES:
- Hoger would need to be run every time the graphic card's clock is changed.
- Before running Hoger, a file must be specified in Hoger.ini (line 2 in the file).
For Windows 9X, this file is ati2vxag.vxd. For NT-based OS, it is probably ati2mtag.sys. It is also preferable to have only one instance of this file on your computer.
- In line 1 of Hoger.ini, if you set this value to '1', Hoger automatically starts and quits afterwards.
This is useful for setting your graphic card's clock at each start of Windows.
If you are happy with your overclock setting and want the same setting every time you start Windows, you can do the following:
1. Set the desired setting using your overclocking utility, and make it set this setting every time you start Windows.
2. Create a shortcut to Hoger in your Startup folder, so that it is executed every time you start Windows. You would probably want to set line 1 of Hoger.ini to '1'. Also, you should make sure that Hoger is executed after your overclocking utility.
- Hoger has only been tested on Windows ME. As such, it may not work on other platforms. As always, there is no guarantee that Hoger will work as expected.
- By releasing Hoger, there is a risk that Hoger will not work in future ATI Radeon driver releases.
Download Hoger here. Note that Hoger serves only as a temporary measure, to bridge the time gap until the next release of the overclocking utilities (Radeonator, PowerStrip, etc), when the current overclock problem should be resolved.
Request:
If you own a Radeon 9000 Pro or a Radeon 9700 Pro, or happen to have BIOSes for either of these cards, please send the BIOS to afax@afax.cjb.net
You can get your graphic card's BIOS using atiflash, which you can download from
here
Once you've extracted atiflash, in DOS type in the following commands:
atiflash -s 0 backup.rom
This will save the BIOS of the card at slot zero to a file named "backup.rom"
Note that in the above, the '0' before 'backup.rom' is the number zero, and not the letter O.
