Scottish Luau Heats Up Summer!

Reported by: Jerry Lubin

It was a great evening for Scottish Country Dancing. The temperature was just right! Entering the social hall at St. Barnabas, arriving dancers were greeted by bagpipe music they had never heard before - Hawaiian! Unexpected, lush and lovely.

The unusual music was perfect for the attire of the dancers. Wonderful combinations - his & her outfits, muted color kilts with wild, wild multi-colored shirts, lovely ladies in flowing island robes and just about every attractive combination for each woman and man!

The program, devised by Doug Macdonald, kept people on the floor with a good mix of tempi and levels. Sprightly dancing worked up appetites for (semi) Hawaiian Luau food. Piled high buffet tables refreshed and restored the dancers at each break. All in all, a winning combination on a great dance floor!

The judges for the evening's contests, Doug Macdonald and I, had to choose from a crowded room of potential prizewinners. It was only after reluctantly eliminating many noteworthy costumes, each a winner, that the "official" prizes of fresh pineapples and leis were awarded to:

The Perfect Match - Jan & Bob Harmon
The Perfect McDonald Shirt - Alfred McDonald
The Longest Wearing Hawaiian Shirt - Jerry Shaw
Three Gorgeous Gowns - Annelise Olsen, Jan McCoy and Camille Dull
The applause meter went off scale as the hall emphatically recognized Annelise Olsen for her unparalleled, virtuoso, mindbending win of the Limbo contest. Such grace also shone on the dance floor. Don Cutler also proved himself a winner at the limbo bar. Both received free admittance to the next monthly dance. It was a marvelous evening for those who attended.
