OpenBB Forum

I recently discovered a new open source PHP forum that uses MySQL.  From what I have seen, it is very lean and fast.  You can find out more at OpenBB.com

Interestingly, they also offer free OpenBB forum hosting, which is supplied with your own customisable version of OpenBB pre-installed.  For many of you this may be a better option than using the CGI-BIN server.

Total Lunar Eclipse Coming May 15-16

On the night of May 15-16, millions of eyes will be drawn skyward, where there will hang a mottled, coppery globe -- our Moon -- completely immersed in the long, tapering cone of shadow cast into space by Earth.

New URLs

As the URL for this section is a little hard to remember, I've signed up for a couple of URL redirects.

You can now type http://spacelog.cjb.net or http://sp.freeurl.com into your browser's address bar to get to this web log.

Of course, you could always bookmark the page instead (hint hint).

Site updated

In case you haven't noticed yet, the main help site has been updated recently.

Other than removing broken links and changing outdated information, I have added several new sections.

Find out more on the May 2003 Update page.

phpBB2

Following on from my last entry, DK3.com also offer a remotely hosted version of the phpBB2 forum.

If you need mail options with your forum, this could be worth a closer look.

PHP-Nuke

A number of you have been asking how to set up PHP-Nuke at Spaceports.  Personally, I think there are much better programs available, but I can understand that some of you have your hearts set on using this huge program.

Well, I'm not going to tell you how to install it on the CGI-BIN server, because quite frankly its not a straightforward process - especially considering the lack of sendmail and the 1000 file limit - and cgi-bin.spaceports.com is overcrowded already.

I can suggest an alternative though.  There is a remotely hosted version available from DK3.com.

Okay, so the free version doesn't have that many templates available, but it does allow you to send user passwords via email, and the server is optimised for that particular program.
