The Web Site Servers

An introduction to the Spaceports planet Web site servers.

First of all, the name of the server you are on will most likely be different to the one this site is on (I applied for this site in early 2000).  The email you were sent will tell you which planet (or other celestial body) the server you are on is named after.

Secondly (and more obviously), your username will be different, as will your password.  These are also included in that email, so don't lose it!

Planet?

When Spaceports first started, the servers were named after planets in our solar system.  This was later expanded to include known celestial bodies.

I'm not sure when the term was first used, as it was already fairly commonplace in the Forums when I first started to visit.  I would assume that it was soon after the CGI-BIN server was introduced though.

Calling them "Web site servers" would be a little vague, as the CGI-BIN server can also be used for dynamic Web pages - in effect a Spaceports Web site is spread across two servers.

Important considerations

The planet servers are set up to be used for standard HTML, graphic, video and sound files only.  Advanced features such as CGI, PHP, SSI and MySQL are only available on the CGI-BIN server.

Only links to HTML files on the planet server will work from sites outside of Spaceports.  If you try to use an image stored on your Spaceports Web site from another host it will not display.  This is to prevent sites at Spaceports being used as a storage for sites hosted elsewhere.

Sites hosted here can have an unlimited amount of space allocated to them, so if you really need to use images etc. for another site, the easiest thing to do is move that site here.

You start off with 20Mb of space allocated to you.  If you fill that up, you can apply for more from the member's area of the Spaceports main site.  Acceptance depends on the use of your current space (i.e. you are adhering to the Spaceports rules).

If you need an idea of how big 20Mb actually is, a novel such as Robinson Crusoe would be about 700Kb (0.7Mb) and Alice in Wonderland would be about 200Kb (0.2Mb) in HTML format (without images).

This leads us nicely onto the next topic.

Site stats

One of the most recently added features for Spaceports users is the site stats page.

This allows you to check statistics such as:-

  • Space allocated to you
  • Space used
  • Page views
  • Bandwidth used

These useful statistics can be found by logging into the member's area of the Spaceports main page.
