In the world of 2030 AD, the
lives of the people are ruled by an all-seeing, all-knowing tyrant
called Monarch. According to legend, this despot was once one of
Earth’s heroes – no one was sure exactly which one – and by
the new century’s first decade, turned evil, slaying all of
Earth’s superheroes and declaring himself ruler. Matthew
Ryder, has the courage to try to alter Earth’s destiny, as he
volunteers for a perilous time-travel experiment that will
hurl him back through time. Lying to Monarch, Ryder swears to
preserve the series of historical events that lead to Monarch’s
sovereignty, but his actual agenda is to somehow locate and
exterminate the hero who will become Monarch. Ryder becomes Waverider and arrives in the present day. He turns to Superman and
the JLA for help. Together the world’s
superheroes succeed in the changing of the future – but as a
result, they unwittingly unleashed tomorrow’s Monarch – who is
revealed to be Hawk of the Teen Titans -- into the world of today.
