Ted Kord had always had a head for science and
a penchant for taking risks. So, when he had to stop his uncle
from taking over the world, he took it all in stride. What he
didn't expect was to become a super-hero because of it. During
the confrontation with his uncle, Ted discovered his old
archaeology professor, Dan Garrett, was the original Blue
Beetle. Fatally wounded during the battle, Garrett asked Ted
to carry on as the Blue Beetle. And Ted has done just that --
albeit in his own unique, and often humorous, style.
Possessing no super-powers, the Blue Beetle
relies solely on his wits and technical skills. Pilot
extraordinaire and master inventor, Blue Beetle has armed
himself with all kinds of crime-fighting gadgets, including a
sidearm that shoots out blasts of compressed air or bright
strobe flashes and "frictionless foam," a gooey substance
which makes any surface incredibly slick. His pride and joy is
the Bug, a solar-powered ship that can travel both by air and
underwater.
After uncovering a secret plot to eliminate
metahumans, particularly his colleagues in the JLA, Blue
Beetle recently met a heroic end via a gunshot to the head
administered by Maxwell
Lord, the new Black King of the covert operation known as
Checkmate.
