Scott Free was delivered as an infant by his
father -- Highfather, ruler of New Genesis -- to the hands of
Darkseid, tyrant of Apokolips, to end the war between the two
planets. (Likewise, Orion -- the only son of Darkseid -- was
sent to live on New Genesis.) Despite all attempts to break
his spirit, Scott knew he was meant for a greater destiny.
Scott eventually escaped from Apokolips, and made his way to
Earth, where he met Thaddeus Brown, the original Mister
Miracle, and Oberon, his
trusted friend. After Thaddeus was killed, Scott assumed the
role of Mister Miracle after bringing Thaddeus' murderers to
justice. Although he prefers the life of a performer over that
of a superhero, Mister Miracle has spent time as a member of
the Justice League and continues to protect the innocent.
Scott is married to Big Barda, another fugitive from Apokolips
and the former leader of Darkseid's Female Furies.
Unlike most of the New Gods, Mister Miracle
possesses no natural super-powers. A technological genius and
escape artist supreme, they haven't invented the lock Mister
Miracle can't pick, or the trap he can't beat. In addition to
his natural skills, Scott employs numerous devices, including
his aero-disks, which allow him to fly, a multi-cube, a device
that can shoot laser beams, create sonic vibrations and other
functions, and his Mother Box, a living computer with vast
powers.
Scott was recruited into the Justice League
by the mysterious
Maxwell Lord almost immediately after it was founded
(JLIA-001). The exact circumstances surrounding his
induction remain unclear. Mister Miracle soon proved
himself one of the most resourceful and capable members of the
JLI, and it was his intervention that thwarted the master pan
of Metron's sentient computer (JLIA-012). Mister Miracle
was captured by Manga Khan when the Cluster first arrived on
Earth (JLIA-015), but was rescued by his JLI comrades just
before he could b e traded to Granny Goodness for a Boom Tube
(JLIA-021).
Some months later, Scott found himself
contractually obligated to Manga Khan and Funky Flashman, who
forced him to participate n a intergalactic tour to promote
his cleaning invention, the Miracle Mister (JLI-S01).
This tour lasted several months, and ended up on Apokalips,
where Scott was forced to battle the Female Furies (MISTER
MIRACLE #17-18). After this debacle, Scott returned to
Earth (MISTER MIRACLE #19).
Meanwhile, unbeknownst to Scott, Manga Khan
had replaced him on Earth with a robot duplicate. Due to
other pressing concerns, the members of Justice League America
did not notice the substitution, and before the truth came
out, the robot was blown up by Despero, causing the Leaguers
to believe that Scott was dead (JLIA-039). Fortunately,
this mix up was solved when the real Mister Miracle returned
to Earth (JLIA-040).
There are two main facts to Scott Free's
personality. the first is his obsession with escape
Scott's entire life is built around the concepts of escape and
freedom. He and Barda try to escape from their notoriety
and horrible pasts in order to live normal lives.
Scott's second overriding personality trait
is his profound compassion. He cooperates with the
League simply because it gives him an opportunity to use his
extraordinary abilities to help people. (RW)
