If the JLA is a modern-day pantheon, Plastic Man is the freewheeling, shape-shifting trickster god. Playful, carefree, creative, and versatile, he is a hero for the sheer thrill of the challenge. But beneath his manic exterior lies a dedication to doing the job well (though mostly to spite his opponents). He's a hero not to be taken as lightly as he seems to take his own exploits.

As a member of the JLA, Plastic Man's upbeat nature and sense of humor serve as much-needed comic relief to JLA meetings and missions. His fortitude and fast thinking may make him a member of great repute — if he survives the consequences of posing as a whoopee cushion on Batman's roundtable chair or asking Orion to pull his finger.  (DCWEB)

Recently, it was revealed that Plas had fathered a son, Luke McDunnagh, who today at ten years old possesses the same shape-shifting powers albeit without Plas's color limitation.  As an unfortunate result of  the Obsidian Age, Plastic Man spent three thousand years at the bottom of the sea consciously scattered in thousands of pieces.  It was not until the present day that the JLA was able to locate and re-emulsify him.  While his helpless experience was a testament to his true physical resilience and durability, it not only affected Plas's already zany, inorganic mind but also strengthened the love for his son. (GA)

While some believe that Plastic Man was brought into the JLA to be the team's comic relief, Batman asserts it was for his amazing shape-changing powers and ability to think fast on his feet.  His unpredictability, ever-present grin, and near-constant stream of puns and pranks were just part of the package.  A super hero for the sheer thrill and excitement of it all, Plas serves in the League with a dedication and fortitude that often contradicts his upbeat, playful attitude--  a virtue the League's members try to keep in mind when they find themselves stuck as Plas's straight man.  What still comes up for debate, however, is whether or not his freewheeling, carefree demeanor is a teasing charade and a reflection of his new lease on life...or if his acid bath not only gave him superpowers, but also left him a few cards short of a full deck.
