NOTES
Created by Louise Simonson and Jon Bogdanove

During his JLA tour, engineering genius Steel hung out quite a bit with the zany Plastic Man as an unlikely pair of  creative "lateral thinkers."

Steel's Hammer
Steel can control the flight path of his hammer after it leaves his hand, causing it to turn and stop instantaneously.  The same dampeners that allow Steel this degree of control also increase the hammer's inertia relative to the distance thrown, which increases its damage and material strength. DCU

John Henry Irons had always wanted to make an impact on others, and he certainly has. In addition to being an engineering genius who created and operates the SteelWorks techno-foundry in Metropolis, he's the hammer-wielding armored hero called Steel. Irons was inspired by Superman to help others, so it was only fitting that the Man of Tomorrow would sponsor Steel's membership into the JLA. Irons fought proudly beside them for a time, but eventually put himself on reserve member status to focus on his greatest responsibility: being a surrogate father to his teenaged niece, Natasha. (JLAZ-03)

Beyond providing Steel with greatly enhanced strength and protection from most forms of physical harm, his incredible suit of armor is armed with a rivet blaster and a powerful sledgehammer. Powerful jets housed in the boots of the armor allow Steel to fly at remarkable speeds.

The armor worn by Steel is one of the most incredible pieces of engineering ever created.  On top of providing a formidable suit of armor that greatly enhances his strength and enables him to fly via its boot jets, the suit also contains a sophisticated sensor array, a remote control system and a computer uplink to the JLA mainframe and Oracle. (WEG)

More recently, as a result of a battle involving Darkseid on Apokolips, Steel sustained serious injuries incapacitating his ability to suit up his battle armor.
