A Guardian Angel in Heaven's Eagle Host for a
million years, Zauriel renounced his immortality after falling
in love with the human he was assigned to prrotect. The Pax-Dei
were surprised at his decision to give up a promising future
in the Army of Heaven, and his departure aroused the
suspicions of a cadre of angels who knew he had overheard
their plans to unseat God. A number of traitors, all members
of the Bull Host and led by the King Angel Asmodel, followed
Zauriel to Earth and would have destroyed him if not for the
intervention of the Justice League.
Defeated but unbowed, Asmodel and his flock returned to heaven
to continue their schemes, and Zauriel was offered a place in
the JLA. An obvious contender, his previous role taught him to
cherish the lives of others and his knowledge of the occult
and ancient combat techniques allows him to play a unique role
in the team.
